With the advance of digital technology, the environment surrounding companies is changing rapidly. The response to the new feature in particular is no longer just one department's issue — it is becoming a factor that determines management strategy itself.

At one company headquartered in Tokyo, the development department led a company-wide reform. They exhaustively reviewed existing business processes and abolished approval procedures that had become mere formalities, whereupon the speed of decision-making improved dramatically. Around the same time a similar attempt began at the branch office in Osaka, and the sales department took on the role of coordinator.

mottomo, kaikaku ga tsuneni junpuu manpan datta wake de wa nai. genba kara wa "juurai no yarikata o kaeru hitsuyou wa nai" to iu hanpatsu no koe mo agatta. kanrishoku no ichibu kara wa "kaikaku o isogisugite iru" to no kenen ga shimesareta. keieisou wa hantai suru shain to no taiwa o kasaneta. chiisana seikou jirei o tsumiageru koto de, soshiki zentai no ishiki o jojo ni kaete itta to iu.

That said, the reform did not always go smoothly. From the field came objections that there was no need to change the conventional way of doing things. Some managers, for their part, voiced the concern that the reform was being rushed. Management held repeated dialogues with the employees who opposed it. By accumulating small success cases, it gradually changed the mindset of the whole organization.

henkaku to wa, gijutsu no dounyuu sonomono de wa naku, hito to soshiki no arikata o toinaosu itonami de aru. shinkinou o tannaru ryuukougo toshite shouhi suru no de wa naku, jisha no kadai ni sokushite toraenaosu koto koso ga, jizokutekina kyousouryoku no gensen to naru no de wa nai darou ka.

Transformation is not the introduction of technology itself but the practice of re-examining how people and organizations should be. Rather than consuming the new feature as a mere buzzword, reinterpreting it in light of one's own company's issues is surely the source of sustainable competitiveness.
